Diego Pary, ambassador to the United Nations Organization (UN), maintained that Bolivia will not identify itself with either Ukraine or Russia. He added that what is required is the cessation of hostilities in order to find a peaceful solution to the conflict.
“We are not going to identify ourselves with one or the other of the parties,” Pary told Erbol.
The ambassador pointed out that “this should be the orientation of States like ours that have declared themselves peaceful, States that have defined that war is not a mechanism for settling disputes.”
On Friday, the UN Human Rights Council approved the launch of investigations into possible human rights violations by Russia during its invasion of Ukraine. Bolivia abstained from voting.
On March 2, the national representation at the UN, led by Pary, abstained from voting for or against the resolution calling for the end of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the immediate withdrawal of its troops.
Former presidents criticized the position of the Executive and argued that the ruling party violates the Constitution. “If you condemned the aggression, abstention does not change. Foreign Ministry, what is the value of our adherence to the UN Charter and the CPE that reject the war of aggression as a means of resolving conflicts between States?”, said former President Eduardo Rodríguez Veltzé. Pary stated that “at this moment in history, what is required (is) to stop the use of weapons, the cessation of hostilities is required in order to find a peaceful solution to the conflict.”
