Leo XIV keeps Orani Tempesta as Archbishop of Rio for another 2 years

The cardinal, at the age of 75, handed over his renunciation to the Vatican, according to the rules of canon law. Leo XIV welcomed the resignation request, but asked the Rio archbishop to be in office.

The Pope has expressed recognition and gratitude for the service provided by Dom Orani over these years and has asked to “continue he leading God’s people with serenity, generosity and pastoral zeal.”

The cardinal welcomed the decision with “spirit of communion and renewed commitment, inviting all the clergy, religious, religious and lay faithful to join in prayer and renewed missionary burning, especially in this time of joy when the archdiocese celebrates its 450 -year jubilee”.

Appointment

Dom Orani João Tempesta was appointed Cardinal by Pope Francis in the consistory of February 22, 2014.
