Due to the great controversy that has been unleashed between the Colombian government and the Peruvian, before the claim of the President of the Republic, Gustavo Petro on the island of Santa Rosa located in the Amazon River, it was announced that in mid -September the two nations would meet to define the future of the territory in question.

It is worth clarifying that this occurred after the president relieved a diplomatic conflict that seemed zanked many years ago when accusing the government of Peru of having “copied” a Colombian territory in the Amazon, because he assures that the Rio de Janeiro protocol was violated with which he put himself End to the War of the two countries between 1932 and 1933.
With the above, he announced in a statement made within the framework of the commemoration of the National Day of the Battle of Boyacá the reasons why he does not agree with the acts adopted by Peru in this lawsuit.
The first thing that the Head of State highlighted is that the so -called Santa Rosa Island along with other river formations that emerged in the Amazonas River after the only binational allocation of islands between the Republic of Colombia and that of Peru held in the year 1929 have not been assigned to either of the two republics.
A second point is related to the fact that Peru is ignoring the binational legal instruments by incorporating an unclean island and establishing an international limit between the two countries, which mentions that the right of primacy of international law on domestic law is being violated.

As a fourth point, he stressed that the unilateral act of demanding the registration of vessels in the so -called island of Santa Rosa is unacceptable and violation of the spirit of free navigability through the Amazon River contemplated in the Act of Rio de Janeiro of 1934, especially in its article 12.

On the other hand, the Head of State reiterated his willingness to reactivate the permanent planned commission for the Inspection of the Colomboperuana Comperif border that will promote actions to guarantee the fulfillment of the Rio de Janeiro protocol of 1934.
And with this he announced that he receives the invitation of the Government of Peru to participate in the Permanent Mixed Commission for the Inspection of the Colomboperuana Comperif border that will take place the next September 11 and 12, 2025 in the city of Lima.
Finally, he mentioned that Colombia reaffirms its commitment to the integration, regional, peace and diplomacy as a way to seek the solution.

‘We are not going to war’
In the same speech, Gustavo Petro announced that, although this dispute was climbed, the idea will not be to a war between Colombia and Peru, but hopes that with dialogue a binational agreement is reached.
“We are going to a war, do we abandon the territory so that the mafias subjugate the population to blood and fire or reach a tripartite agreement? We would enter war here, how to tell humanity that there is no hope because its third climate pillar will perish”Petro said.
