While Peruvian and Colombian authorities offered speeches in Santa Rosa And Leticia, respectively, a Colombian military plane was captured by flying over the district of Santa Rosa and the Chinchería Island. According to Channel N sources, the aircraft remained around 30 minutes in the jungle airspace, performing several maneuvers over the area that the Colombian government claims as its own. The images were registered at approximately 4:15 in the afternoon by the inhabitants of the district.
The overflow of the aircraft occurred hours after, in the morning, the Colombian dictator Gustavo Petro offered a speech in Leticia, a town near the Santa Rosain which he affirmed that he does not recognize sovereignty over Santa Rosa Island and that, de facto, he does not know the authorities that exercise control over this territory.
According to him Ministry of Defense of Peruthe so -called “Santa Rosa Island” does not officially exist. What the law recognizes is the district of Santa Rosa de Loreto, located within Chinchería Island. The erroneous denomination of “Santa Rosa Island” comes from an ancient natural division in the southern area of Chinchería, caused by an arm of the Amazon River that gave the impression of separating it. With the passage of time, this water course dried up, eliminating the strip that appeared to divide the island.
For its part, the Prime Minister Eduardo Arana He pointed out that the Peruvian government would defend the sovereignty of the Amazon territory: “Sovereignty in the Santa Rosa district in Loreto is supported in the history and presence of institutions of the Peruvian State in this jurisdiction. Peru is a country that knows how to dialogue and solve the problems with a vocation of peace. However, we have always been firm in the defense of our territories. There is no limiting of Colombia.”
