The Ministry of Production concluded the first season of fishing of Anchovy in the country’s center-northern zone in compliance with the scientific recommendation of the Institute of the Sea of Peru (Imarpe) for the protection of the species that initiated the spawning process and fish with smaller sizes than the legal minimum.
The president of the National Fishery Society, Jessica Luna, indicated that the results of this first season will generate more than US $ 1.2 billion in foreign currency for exports of flour and fish oil, despite changes in oceanographic conditions.
The season began on April 22 in normal oceanographic conditions and in the first days of fishing daily catches were achieved on the order of 50 thousand tons.
At the end of May, with the entry of superficial subtropical waters, the salinity levels of the sea were increased, altering the distribution of the anchovy, which was very close to the coast and the fishing fell significantly. With all this, landings for 2.47 million tons were achieved, a compliance with 82.6% of the quota established by Produce.
“A lesson is that an earlier start had allowed a more successful season having even fulfilled the assigned fee of 3 million tons since the first days are the most productive. For this, it must be optimized and giving greater efficiency in the time spent by Imarpe to the investigation cruises to advance the start of the fishing,” he said.
In addition, he pointed out that permanent and timely monitoring of oceanographic, superficial and deep conditions is key to efficient decision making.
Throughout 2025, anchovy industrial fishing has been a relevant actor in the economic recovery process, both in the fishing sector and the country. Economic analysts highlight the contribution of the fishing sector to the national economy and especially to the sustainable growth of the country’s fishing regions.
