Amnesty International stressed the importance of guaranteeing a “solid, unified and concrete strategy for the action of the European Union on Human Rights in Venezuela”

Amnesty International called on the European Union, through an open letter, in which he asked to redouble his actions in favor of human rights in Venezuela.

“The spiral of #DDHH violations that followed the presidential election – and its high impact on the population of the country – should be a call of EU attention,” the organization wrote on its account on Thursday, August 7.

Similarly, he urged the authorities to inform the whereabouts of people who are in a situation of forced disappearance and release all people arbitrarily detained, including citizens of the European Union.

He considered urgent to strengthen support for human rights defenders, journalists and civil society in general.

Amnesty International’s call occurs one day after the update of the situation of human rights in Venezuela before the Organization of American States (OAS) this Miécoles August 6.

The Commissioner and Special Rapporteur for Venezuela of the Inter -American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), Gloria de Mees, who presented the report before the agency, described an alarming panorama of impunity, systematic repression by the State, violation of human rights and unjustified imprisonment of OPPENSORS AND DEFENDERS of Human Rights.

He recalled that after the presidential elections of 2024, at least 25 people were killed during the protests period; of which, 24 were civilians, mostly young people under 30, from popular sectors. He stressed that 24 of the deceased died from shooting in the thorax or in the head, and that two of them were 15 and 17 -year -old teenagers.

“A year later, there is still no justice, there is no accountability and no significant action to investigate these deaths or actions to protect the rights of detainees,” he said.

*Journalism in Venezuela is exercised in a hostile environment for the press with dozens of legal instruments arranged for the punishment of the word, especially the laws “against hatred”, “against fascism” and “against blockade.” This content was written taking into consideration the threats and limits that, consequently, have been imposed on the dissemination of information from within the country.
