The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro a ceremony will preside on Thursday in the border city of Leticia, in which he plans to reaffirm his country’s sovereignty over him Amazon river. The simultaneous presence of both authorities in the border area occurs in the midst of the tension generated by the recent statements of Petro, who accused the government of Dina Boluarte of “Copar Colombian territory.”
The conflict point revolves around Chinería Island, where the Santa Rosa district is located, whose creation was approved by Congress. The norm establishes the limits of the district and reaffirms Peruvian sovereignty over the area, located in the Loreto region.
In response, the Government of Peru rejected Petro’s claims through an official statement and stressed that the territory is “under sovereignty and jurisdiction of Peru.” In addition, he recalled that the belonging of the island was defined in the Solomon-Lozano Treaty of 1922 and in subsequent agreements that established the current limits between the two countries.

The Minister of the Interior of Colombia, Armando Benedetti, during an interview for W Radio, commented that the government of the country directed by Gustavo Petro, would have the possibility of resorting to the Court of The Hague to resolve the territorial conflict on Santa Rosa Island.
