Deputies unanimously voted the project that establishes measures to mitigate the effects on the border
The Chamber of Deputies voted on Tuesday night, unanimously, the project sent by the Executive Power that provides for the reduction of up to 75% in the employer contributions of new jobs and the elimination of the minimum VAT and the 50% reduction of the basic rate in some products in the border departments with Brazil.
The bill had already been approved in the Deputies Finance Commission; Now it must be treated by the Senate where the Broad Front has a majority.
“Yesterday the Chamber of Deputies unanimously voted the project sent by the Executive Power that determines measures to mitigate the effects of the exchange difference in the border departments with Brazil; those that are most benefited are mainly artigas, Rivera and Cerro Largo,” Said Deputy Julieta Sierra of the Popular Participation Movement (MPP).
In those departments, he added, “The problem is structural, the problem of high informality rates and the problem of unemployment, and also, at this time, the problem of the big exchange difference that makes merchants not to compete with the shops on the Brazilian side and also to consumers the obligation to virtually go to buy on the other side for finding the substantially cheaper products.”
He explained that the Chamber of Deputies voted “The creation of a special border trade regime to import more simply, the reduction of up to 75% of employer contributions of new formal jobs, the elimination of the minimum VAT and the 50% reduction of the basic rate.”
Indicated that “The merchants have cataloged this as a historical signal, as measures that have been demanding a long time for the border to see how we make trade in Uruguay more competitive and also as a look from the Government of the Broad Front to that deep interior that has different realities.”
He recalled that “These measures were announced just three months after the Government of the Broad Front assume at a press conference with the economic team in Artigas itself, not in Executive Tower from Montevideo.”
