FIFA opens special window for players in Russia and Ukraine

FIFA is opening a special transfer window for foreign players who play in Russia and Ukraine, the governing body of world football said on Monday (7).FIFA opens special window for players in Russia and Ukraine

“With regard to the situation in Ukraine, in order to provide players and coaches with the opportunity to work and receive a salary, and to protect Ukrainian clubs, unless the parties to the contract explicitly agree otherwise, all employment contracts of Foreign players and coaches with clubs affiliated to the Ukrainian Football Association [UAF] will be considered automatically suspended until the end of the season in Ukraine [30 de junho de 2022]without the need for any action by the parties in this regard,” FIFA said in a statement.

Regarding the situation of players operating in Russia, the football governing body said: “To facilitate the departure of foreign players and coaches from Russia, in case clubs affiliated to the Football Union of Russia [FUR] do not reach a mutual agreement with their respective foreign players and coaches before or on March 10, 2022 […] foreign players and coaches will have the right to unilaterally suspend their employment contracts with the FUR-affiliated clubs in question until the end of the season in Russia [30 de junho de 2022]”.

“The suspension of a contract […] will mean that players and coaches will be considered ‘out of contract’ until 30 June 2022 and will therefore have the freedom to sign a contract with another club without facing consequences of any kind.

Brazil has 30 players with ties to Ukrainian football teams (among them defender Marlon Santos and forwards David Neres and Pedrinho). Another 13 Brazilians play in Russia (like strikers Malcom, Claudinho and Yuri Alberto).
