Conference of Indigenous Women defines 50 policies proposals

About 5,000 indigenous women from different biomes and from all states of Brazil participate from 4 to 6 August in Brasilia in the 1st National Conference of Indigenous Women with the theme “Women Guardians of the Planet for Earth Healing” to discuss public policies, rights and the future of territories.Conference of Indigenous Women defines 50 policies proposals

From the meeting, 50 priority proposals should be left to build a “National Policies for Indigenous Women’s Policies from the perspective of coping with violence”. THE Minister of Indigenous Peoples, Sônia Guajajara, announced on Wednesday (6), that at the end of the meeting a joint concierge will be signed with the Ministry of Women (Mmulheres) of creation of an interministerial working group to give progress to the construction of this plan.

“From this book of proposals that will be presented, we always receive the demand to advance with the demarcation and protection of indigenous territories, which turns out to be a general agenda and well defended by indigenous women; and the issue of health strengthening for indigenous women that we have the indigenous health subsystem, but there is no specific policy for the care of indigenous women in the territory.”

You Themes discussed at the 1st National Conference of Indigenous Women include territorial law and management, climate emergencies, bioeconomics, indigenous women health, education and transmission of ancestral knowledge, and combat gender violence.

Demarcation and Dismissal of Indigenous Lands

Considering the demarcation of indigenous lands as a priority agenda of the meeting of indigenous women, this week, the minister expressed concern with the TEMPORAL LAWby understanding that the law wages the advance of the approval of indigenous territories in the country, including those in the process of completion of the process.

During the interview with the broadcasters, the Minister also highlighted as a negative point the approval in the Federal Senate Plenary of the Legislative Decree (PDL) 717/2024authored by Senator Esperidião Amin (PP-SC), who sustained the decrees signed by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva of homologation of indigenous lands of Toldo Imbu and Morro dos Cavalos, in two municipalities of Santa Catarina.

Sonia Guajajara evaluated the result of these operations. “A contribution to the very reduction of deforestation index, because when we take the invaders, be the legal prospector, the legal timber, the land grabbers of the indigenous lands, we can already see this territory again regenerate again.”

About the Yanomami indigenous people, the minister described that the indigenous people have resumed the traditional way of life and have the freedom to transit in the territory and to produce their own foods in the fields that returned to the place, previously occupied illegally by mines.
