Santo Domingo.-The authorities investigate the origin of the 137 kilograms of liquid cocaine, the greatest cargo of this substance in that state confiscated in the country, which would be exported to Spain in a cargo of soft drinks.
The drug was confiscated during an operation carried out last weekend at the Caucedo Multimodal Port. It was hidden in an export container containing more than 46,000 bottles of juices and soft drinks. During the inspection, a strange substance was detected in one of the containers, which immediately activated the protocol of action by prosecutors and operational units.
A source explained that it is investigated whether cocaine arrived in a liquid state or if it was transformed into Dominican territory, since it is presumed that the cargo was contaminated locally, as it is an export of products produced in the country.
He added that drug trafficking networks resort to this modality of converting cocaine into liquid, since in that state it is easier to evade controls with X -rays and canine units.
The operation, which extended until noon yesterday, was attended by several prosecutors, 20 forensic analysts, 29 administrative technicians, security personnel and officers of the National Directorate of Drug Control (DNCD). The entire load was transferred for expertise purposes.
In total, the experts of the National Institute of Forensic Sciences (INACIF), headed by its director, Dr. Sonia Lebrón, analyzed 46,944 bottles (equivalent to 2,786 bundles), of which 623 containers gave positive to cocaine, with a total weight of 137.28 kilograms.
“This confiscation represents the biggest case of liquid cocaine seized in the history of the fight against drug trafficking in the Dominican Republic,” said Carlos Devers, spokesman for the DNCD.
According to the load manifesto, the container had as a final destination Spain. According to preliminary investigations, drinks would have been acquired by a company domiciled in La Vega and contaminated by criminal networks operating in the country.
Likewise, it was clarified that the trademarks that appear on the labels of the contaminated drinks have no link with the case, since the merchandise was acquired in bulk.
