The President of the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP30), Ambassador André Corrêa do Lago, announced This Tuesday (5) the formalization of a council to discuss with society and local authorities solutions to adapt to climate change.
Corrêa do Lago reaffirmed that the issue of adaptation to climate change will be one of the main themes of COP 30, which will take place in November, Belém, Pará.
“The Adaptation Council for COP 30 includes several Brazilian personalities that will support us in this dialogue with civil society and local authorities,” Lago told Insper event.
The ambassador spoke via a teleconference to the event, which took place in São Paulo.
Among the members of the Council, Lago cited the executive secretary for South America in Iclei (local governments for sustainability), Jussara Carvalho; Peruvian scientist José Marengo; the executive director of the organization of the Amazonian Cooperation Treaty (OTCA), Vanessa Grazziotin; and Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, former president of Liberia.
“We have to define 100 indicators globally that will become the reference for us to understand what should be done with adaptation. After Belém, the adaptation will have a guide, there will be a map of the path of the main concerns that the 196 countries participating in the negotiation agree that they are priority,” said Lago.

The ambassador also pointed out that the Brazilian government is working so that hosting prices at hotels in Belém do not affect the presence of all delegations at the event.
“My interest, of course, is to prevent hotel prices from interfering in the presence of all delegations in Bethlehem, because if we do not have all the delegations in Belém, you can have a question about the legitimacy of what we negotiate because some countries could not go because of hotel price,” he said.
