On the first day of the return of recess, the National Congress held a solemn session in honor of the Voice of Brazil in the plenary of the Chamber of Deputies.
“The voice of Brazil plays a very important role. More than a radio program is an institution of democracy. It is inclusive because it arrives everywhere and guarantees the integrity of information, this attacked today,” said the executive secretary of the Secretariat of Social Communication of the Presidency of the Republic (Secom/PR), Tiago César dos Santos, who represented the federal government in the solemn session.
“EBC is very proud to keep this torch that was lit by Getúlio Vargas for 90 years,” said the director general of Brazil Communication Company (EBC)Bráulio Ribeiro. He thanked all the company employees who guarantee the transmission of the program daily. “With great honor, I represent the EBC right now,” he said.

“The program was not going to be 90 years in the air if it had not to reinvented,” said Senator Jorge Kajuru (PSB-GO), who chaired the solemn session. Former radio and television presenter, he cited his relationship with the program. “It is an honor to be here for those who started their career at the age of 8 on the radio. I loved to hear the voice of Brazil so much that at lunch time, I spoke in Brasilia 19h. And she spoke, my son, is still 11h30 …”, he recalled.
“Voz do Brasil is an example of resistance from public communication,” said the president of the Chamber of Strategic Studies and Debates, Deputy Márcio Jerry (PCdoB-MA). “The voice of Brazil is plural information of public communication and we need to remember that it has not always been unconnected. Right here in this plenary has been discussed several times the extinction of the voice of Brazil,” he said.

During the solemn session, the post office launched a commemorative seal of the 90th anniversary of the voice of Brazil. The state -owned company was represented by the director of governance and strategy, Juliana Picoli Agatte.
Also present were representatives of civil society and other parliamentarians, such as Chamber’s Secretary of Communication, Marx Beltrão (PP-AL); the president of the National Federation of Journalists (Fenaj), Samira de Castro; and the vice-president of the Brazilian Association of Public Communication (ABCPública), Lincoln Macário.
Get to know the history of the voice of Brazil
Created in 1935 during the Getúlio Vargas government, the program was called the Hour of Brazil. It is the oldest official radio program in Brazil still running, recognized by Guinness Book, the Book of Records. Currently, the program brings news of the different powers. The news about the Executive Power is produced and presented by the Brazil Communication Company team (EBC).
The request for the solemn session was authored by Senators Angelo Coronel (PSD-BA), Humberto Costa (PT-PE) and Ciro Nogueira (PP-PI) and federal deputies Marx Beltrão (PP-AL), Charles Fernandes (PSD-BA), Cleber Verde (MDB-MA) and Guilherme Uchoa (PSB-PE).
In the request, parliamentarians point out that Brazil’s voice “remains present in the citizen’s life, in a simple, effective and continuous adaptation to new technological tools”. According to the document, “honoring the 90th anniversary of the voice of Brazil is recognizing its importance in the modern history of Brazil” and, moreover, “respect for democratic debate”.
This year’s celebrations also include a commemorative currency of the Brazilian Mint, a new visual identity for the program and update of the soundtrack, which maintains as the main theme the composition “O Guarani”, by Carlos Gomes.
The program A Voz do Brasil has crossed technological, political and social transformations without ever going down. Now it will also be distributed on digital audio platforms such as Amazon, Apple Podcast, Castbox and Spotify. In the latter it will also be possible to follow as a video. In addition, EBC promotes a series of actions that rescue memories and highlight the relevance of attraction in the lives of Brazilians.
