Femicides in the Dominican Republic: Recent cases that shiver the country

Feminicidios en República Dominicana: Casos recientes que estremecen al país

Dominican Republic has been the scene of mourning and pain for recent femicides that have shuddered the population. January to August, 48 deaths of women have registered, of which 36 have been classified as “intimate” femicides, that is, committed by men with whom the victims had a sentimental bond.

Eight of these crimes would have been perpetrated by members of military bodies: four of the National Police and four of the Armed Forces. In more than 80 % of cases, victims had not previously denounced gender violence before the authorities. In addition, eight of the aggressors committed suicide after committing the fact and two were executed by members of the community.

Given this situation, the Ministry of Interior and Police and the Attorney General’s Office announced the implementation of a plan to combat this scourge. In turn, the Ministry of Defense created the Integral Center for Mental Health of the Armed Forces.

Next, some of the most recent cases that have caused consternation:

The Roman

In Villa Hermosa, La Romana province, a woman identified as Mindalis Núñez, 31, died after receiving a shot in the head, allegedly at the hands of her sentimental partner, the sergeant of the National Police Wilkin Vásquez Ozoria. The incident occurred after both left a disco and had a heated discussion. The defendant also presents a neck wound and was arrested.

Villa Mella

Roselyn Fortunato was killed in Mata Gorda, Punta de Villa Mella, for his ex -partner Hansel Antonio Solís García, who then committed suicide. According to the victim’s mother, the aggressor had threatened her hours before the crime. Supposedly, the tragedy unleashed when Roselyn denied entry to his home.

María Auxiliadora

In this sector of the National District, an army captain, Samuel Mora Alcántara, murdered his ex -partner Elaina Galarza Cabrera, 35, and her mother, Beatriz Cabrera Reyes, 65. Then she took her life in her residence in Lost Sabana. Witnesses say that the officer arrived at the armed place after having collected his minor children and shot at both women in his home.

Baní

In the Los Cayuquitos neighborhood, a man identified as Santo Esmelin Soto Soto, allegedly deported in the United States, broke into the house of his ex -partner and shot at her and her current partner. The victims were Selis Mercedes Sánchez Germán, a 45 -year -old teacher, and Luis Marino Caraballo, a 62 -year -old taxi driver with more than three decades of service in the community.
