‘He undertakes yes or yes’, Peru21 TV program, he spoke with Kenny Lazo, co -founder of ‘Code in my school’, an Arequipa educational venture that is revolutionizing the way of teaching technology in Peru and Latin America.
Its innovative proposal not only seeks to close the digital education gap, but also teaches thousands of students and teachers from urban and rural areas to develop computational thinking, a fundamental ability to the future, even without having a computer.
The importance of understanding technology
For Kenny Lazo, technology is no longer an option, but a necessity. According to the expert, understanding its principles and the impact it can generate is crucial. “Computational thinking will be evaluated by the PISA test in your next interventions”he said, highlighting its global relevance.
Lazo explained that the science of computing is the discipline behind the great technological revolutions such as artificial intelligence, Big Data and the Internet of things. His goal with ‘Code in my school’ is that students understand how these technologies work and, more importantly, that they learn to create with them.
What is computational thinking?
Lico defines computational thinking as the ability to solve problems in a similar way to how a computer scientist would. This process consists of four steps: identify the problem, decompose it in smaller parts, abstract irrelevant details and create a solution through an algorithm or sequence of steps.
The expert stressed that this ability can be taught in a playful way, with diagrams or figures on the floor, demystifying the idea that a computer is needed to learn. «We have made hours of code with 4,000 teachers, which has impacted more than 30,000 students»Lazo revealed.
The future of digital education
Lazo believes that, although artificial intelligence will continue to evolve and facilitate tasks such as the creation of code, what will not change is the need for people to know how to think and solve problems themselves. “The big difference in interviews is that many can bring you the solution, but I ask them how they did it”said Lazo, highlighting that the goal is to form «creators and not just consumers » of technology.
