First Sunday in Electrical blackouts for 45% of Cuba

Apagón en La Habana, Cuba

Not even the energy production of the 24 new solar parks have been able to save Cubans from the constant blackouts.

Arequipa, Peru – The first weekend of August marks an unfortunate precedent for Cubans within the island in relation to the electricity generation this month. For this Sunday, the blackouts will affect almost half of the country.

In its daily part, the Electric Union of Cuba acknowledged that this was affected the 24 hours and remained affected throughout the morning of this August 3.

The maximum affectation due to generation capacity deficit yesterday was 1,756 megawatts (MW) at 9:10 p.m. Not even the energy production of the 24 new photovoltaic solar parks were able to save the Cubans from the constant blackouts.

According to the state company, this last source of generation reached last day about 520 MW as maximum power delivered at the average schedule.

The prognosis for this Sunday is equally nefarious. Currently five units of Thermoelectric generation They are out of service due to breakdowns or maintenance. They highlight breaks in Unit 2 of the CTE Felton and Unit 5 of the CTE Ten of October, as well as repairs in Unit 2 of the Santa Cruz CTE, Unit 4 of the CTE Carlos Manuel de Céspedes in Cienfuegos and Unit 5 of the CTE Renté.

On August 2, the disconnection of the 240 MW pin located in Havana, “for commercial reasons.”

According to the forecast, this Sunday’s peak schedule is estimated to availability of 2,095 MW and a maximum demand of 3,700 MW, for a deficit of 1,605 MW. If the planned conditions are maintained, an affectation (which will really be disconnected) of 1,675 MW at this time.

In areas of the interior of the country, the cuts can exceed 20 hours a day, forcing many families to cook with firewood, improvise cooling systems, and completely reorganize their routines.

Older people, young children and patients with chronic diseases, are the most vulnerable sectors in this situation; which in turn aggravates food insecurity and limits access to drinking water and basic health services.

The energy crisis that Cuba lives is not new, but has climbed more intensity since 2021, when the mass blackouts began after the collapse of several generating units. To this are added the chronic lack of currency, inefficiency in state management, imported fuel dependence and the technical deterioration of an obsolete system.

So far from 2025, at least four national blackouts have been recorded that have left Cuba completely in the dark for several hours. Meanwhile, the regime maintains censorship about official protests and misinformation, without allowing free access to technical data or independent means.

On June 28, more than half of Cuba was in a blackout due to a 1907 megawatts deficit (MW), the greatest affectation that has been recorded in the midst of the energy crisis (not including simultaneous collapses throughout the island).
