The National Electoral Institute (INE) arranged for its destruction and recycling just over 2,200 tons of paper used in last year’s election, when the Congress of the Union and the Presidency of the Republic was renewed, in addition to materials of the citizen consultation of 2022.
Most of the products were delivered for this purpose to the National Textbooks Commission (CONALITEG) for the use of paper.
However, throughout the operation, the INE spent 2 million pesos for viaticos and phlexes, among other expenditures, in order to comply with this ecological mission.
In respective report, it states that two modalities were determined for destruction: 269 districts delivered their documentation to the CONALITEG through the current agreement, while 31 districts destroyed it on their own.
The process included the opening of wineries, preparation and transfer of documentation, as well as public acts with the presence of vocalies, counselors and party representatives.
The INE mentioned that the environmental impact was highlighted because the destruction and recycling of more than 2,200 tons of documentation avoided the felling of about 37 thousand trees, the use of more than 57 million liters of water and the consumption of more than 9 million kilowatts.
Regarding the destruction of documentation still reserved for subsequent studies or pending investigations of the judicial elections, the process will be scheduled.
In this context, at least twice as much as related to the extraordinary election of judging persons must recycle in the future, since only at the federal level more than 600 million tickets were printed, the majority not used due to abstentionism of 87 percent.
