Every day in Latin America and the Caribbean, at least 11 violent deaths of women occur due to gender, and of the countries that report data in this regard, eight realize that in more than 60 percent of the cases, the crime was perpetrated by the couple or former partner, which indicates that despite the regulatory and institutional advances existing in the region, this issue remains a earring.

However, according to gender indicators for the monitoring of sustainable development objectives and the regional gender agenda in Latin America and the Caribbean, there are improvements in legal matters, since in 19 countries and territories of the region feminicide is typified through modifications to criminal codes or specific laws.

According to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean and the United Nations Organization for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (UN Women), at the end of 2023 At least 3,897 women were victims of femicide in 28 countries and territories of Latin America and the Caribbean. However, it is considered a Minimum accounting due to the sub -registration.

In general, All countries and territories of Latin America and the Caribbean have laws to prevent and eradicate violence against women and 14 countries have approved comprehensive laws to address all manifestations of violence in the different spaces in which it occurs.

These international organizations indicate that it is necessary to reinforce the production and integration systems of statistical information with gender approach and intersectionality, and that it includes more frequency in the data report for the monitoring, prevention and sanction of gender aggressions.

In the case of Mexico, the National Network of Alertistas, the Unesco Chair of Human Rights of the National Autonomous University of Mexico and the Mexican Federation of University reports that according to figures from the Center for Studies for the achievement of gender equality, the national tendency of alleged crimes of femicide in 10 years has increased 93 percent, with 8 thousand cases of January 2015 to December 2024. ”

In a report, these organizations report that the State of Mexico is the entity with the highest percentage of victims: 11.1 percent of the total. They are followed by Hidalgo, Jalisco, Morelos and Puebla, with 4.9 percent each, and Tamaulipas with 4.3 percent, while Durango is the state with the lowest percentage, which is 0.6 percent.

They also warn that although in the 32 entities the crime of femicide is formally typified, There are important differences in its definition, penalties, aggravating, evidence and procedures.

That Legislative diversity has resulted in an unequal application of the criminal type, generating obstacles to its approval, which has been repeatedly indicated by international organizations and civil organizations.
