The Rio-Niterói Bridge, the main way of connecting the two cities of the Fluminense Metropolitan Region, will have a different use on Sunday (3). In place of the large amount of vehicles it receives daily, there will be about 5,000 corridors that will compete in the bridge challenge.
The 21 -kilometer route begins on the Niemeyer path in Niterói, crosses the bridge and ends at Praça Mauá, Rio de Janeiro’s port region. The race will start at 6:30 am and scheduled to end at 9:30 am.
The challenge of the bridge is again held after 12 years suspended and, this time, began to integrate the Official Event Calendar From Rio.
According to the City of Niterói, among the 5,000 corridors 52% are cariocas, 17% of Niterói and 31% tourists.
“[O evento tem] Direct impact on the tourism production chain, moving hotels, commerce and services, as well as strengthening sports tourism and strengthening the image of Rio de Janeiro and Niterói as headquarters of major events, ”said Niterói City Hall.
The bridge challenge is being considered by both cities as part of the candidacy they launched to host the PAN and Parapan American Games of 2031 together.
“Evidence that can be held between the two cities are in the plans proposed to Panam, the entity responsible for the games. The choice of headquarters will be released on October 10, in Chile,” said the Niteroi administration.
Transit
For the test, a special traffic scheme was set up with interdictions on both cities.
In Niterói, from 21h this Saturday (2) until 10am on Sunday (3), Professor Plínio Leite Street will have total interdiction, as well as excerpts from Dr. Fróes da Cruz, Saldanha Marinho and Marquês de Caxias streets, between Professor Plínio Leite Street and Visconde do Rio Branco Avenue.
Also during this period, the traffic on Feliciano Sodré Avenue will be partially banned, with blockade of the three lanes from the left towards Centro, in the stretch between Professor Plínio Leite Street and the access ramp to the Rio-Niterói Bridge.
“The organization of the event will be responsible for private traffic operators who will work both around the Niemeyer Way and on the way to the Bridge. In addition, there will be operational support with the mandatory hiring of traffic supporters.”
The city also informed that the measures will be supervised in real time by Nittrans teams, which can make adjustments necessary to ensure the safety of the population and also the competitors.
In the carioca capital, the special scheme will be from 0h to 12h on Sunday, mounted by CET-Rio with the purpose of reducing the impacts on the city’s traffic and ensuring the safety of athletes. In the links between the Rio -Niterói Bridge and the main accesses to Rio de Janeiro some roads will be banned.
In Rio, the traffic operation will be done by 50 professionals, including CET-Rio agents, municipal guards and traffic supporters. They will act “to maintain fluidity, curb irregular parking, order intersections, guide pedestrians and drivers, as well as perform the road blocks during the race.”
Traffic movement will be monitored through cameras at the Center for Operations and Resilience (COR-Rio) in Cidade Nova, central region of the city. The intention is to be able to make adjustments to signal programming, if necessary, to ensure the flow of vehicles.
“In addition, ten variable messaging panels will be used to inform about traffic conditions, road blocks and deviation routes.”
Recommendations
The City of Niterói recommends that pedestrians should cross the places indicated by the signaling or the event counselors; respect locations with parking ban; and pay attention to the guidelines of traffic agents and the implemented signaling.
For drivers, the recommendation is to avoid passing through the event region, because because of the interdictions, traffic conditions will be modified during the test.
