Brasilia
In Brasilia, the act had tracks with messages such as “no amnesty for scammers, dictatorship never again”; “Outside, Yankees”; and “in defense of national sovereignty.”
Student Matheus das Neves, treasurer of the National Students Union (UNE), argued Brazil agency that Trump’s policy is a retaliation for initiatives of the Global South Countries, in particular BRICS. For him, US action is motivated by the national and international far right.
“The role of social movements, during this period, is to denounce these successive attempts at US external interventions in our country, in our self -determination, but above all, to resist and say that our Brazilianness is present and we will continue in the struggle in defense of our sovereignty,” he said.
The director of the Executive of the Federal District Central of Workers (CUT-DF), Washington Domingues Neves, said that the purpose of acts is to clarify the population about the political meaning of this taxation.
“We want to clarify the working class that this attack against Brazil is being plotted by federal deputies elected by Brazilians. These politicians want to harm, politically and economically, our nation. It is of fundamental importance that we Brazilians manifest in,” he told the Brazil agency.
São Paulo
In the state capital, CUT union leader Douglas Izzo stated that the mobilization takes place as a message to the United States that Brazil will not undergo blackmail. “And also, dialoguing with Brazilian society and denouncing a sector, which is Bolsonaro and his family, which act as a Lesa-Patria. The Bolsonaro family articulates, with the United States, against the interests of Brazilians.”
PSTU director Claudio Donizete dos Reis, commented with the Brazil agency that manifestations seek to warn of how Trump’s taxation affects all workers.
“We believe that, besides repudiating the tariff, we need to do the whole process of criminalization of what pockets have been sponsoring, a true betrayal of the homeland, for our sovereignty, to support the articulation to this process,” he said.
For Donizete, the government of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva must protect workers’ rights to Trump’s tariff.
“We believe it is necessary for Lula to be even more emphatic against embargoes, exercising the guarantee of jobs and making the remittances of profits from American multinationals, in particular, not issued,” he added.
