The National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE) revealed that the unemployment rate in Colombia during the month of June 2025 was 8.6 %, which represents a decrease of 1.7 percentage points compared to the same month of the previous year, when it was 10.3 %. This result marks the lowest level for a month of June since 2017 and consolidates a streak of ten consecutive months of reduction in unemployment indicators in the country.

According to the report, in June 831,000 new jobs were registered compared to the same 2024 period. This raised the total number of employed to about 23.7 million people, while the unemployed population fell to approximately 2.2 million, with 401,000 unemployed less than the previous year. The national occupation rate was 58.4 %, which also reflects a sustained improvement in the country’s labor dynamics.

The sector that contributed the most to the generation of employment was that of self -employment, which incorporated 443,000 new employed. This figure shows a recovery of the labor market, although it also arouses concerns about the quality of employment created, since many of these works could be linked to informality or precarious working conditions.

As for labor participation, the global rate remained stable at 63.9 %, while the population outside the workforce reached 14.6 million people, many of whom are not looking for employment for personal, family or educational reasons. This also reflects the structural challenges that persist in equitable access to the labor market.

One of the most significant gaps remains gender inequality. While unemployment among men was 6.9 %, in women it stood at 10.8 %, a difference of almost four percentage points that demonstrates the additional obstacles that women face to access employment, especially in rural regions and in sectors of greater informality.

Although the decrease in unemployment is an encouraging sign for the Colombian economy, experts warn that the challenges have not finished. The country must now focus on improving jobs quality, formalizing work on their own and closing social gaps that limit equitable access to the labor market. Only in this way can a sustainable and inclusive economic recovery be guaranteed.
