Civil Society condemns US sanctions against Alexandre de Moraes

THE Human Rights Watch (HRW) Criticized on Wednesday (30) the measures adopted by the United States Government to sanction the Supreme Federal Tribune Minister (STF) Alexandre de Morares and confirm the taxation of part of Brazilian exports. According to the entity, the measures interfere with the independence of Brazil.

“Sanctions against a Federal Supreme Court minister and the tariffs imposed by the Trump government on Brazil are a clear violation of judicial independence, pillar of democracy. If they disagree with a decision, they should appeal, not to impose punishments on the ministers and the country,” HRW said.

The International Transparency Organization – Brazil considers “alarming and unacceptable” selective use of Magnitsky law for political and economic purposes.

“This practice has become increasingly frequent under the current Trump administration. In the case of the Supreme Court (STF) Minister Alexandre de Moraes, rapporteur of the cases of former President Jair Bolsonaro, such a measure will only foster more political instability in Brazil,” said the entity.

The Brazilian Press Association (ABI) also expressed support to the minister. “The actions aimed at delegitimizing or intimidating public figures that perform essential functions to maintain the rule of law constitute an affront to Brazilian sovereignty and the democratic values they defend,” said the entity.

Sanction

Early US government decided to apply Sanctions against Minister Alexandre de Moraesbased on magnitsky law, a rule that provides economic sanctions for people considered human rights violating.

The US standard provides for the blockade of bank accounts, assets and financial investments in the United States, the ban on transactions of US companies with sanctioned people, as well as the impediment of entry into the country.

However, the application of sanctions against Moraes must have minimum impact. The minister has no assets or accounts at headquarters in that country. He also does not have the habit of traveling to the United States.

The application of the magnitsky law is the second sanction applied against Alexandre de Moares by President Trump.

On July 18, United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio announcedEvagation of the Minister’s Visasyour family members and “allies in the court”.

The announcement was made after Moars opened an inquiry to investigate federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), the former president’s son, for acting with the United States government to promote retaliation measures against the Brazilian government and ministers of the Supreme and try to block the progress of criminal action on the coup plot.

In March this year, Eduardo asked for permission of the parliamentary mandate and went to live in the United States on the grounds of political persecution. The license ended on the 20th.
