Tsunami alert: Aerocivil intensifies monitoring in Pacific airports

Before the Tsunami alert issued by the competent authorities after the earthquake of magnitude 8.8 MW registered in Kamchatka, Russia, the civil aeronautics of Colombia reported that It maintains permanent and exhaustive monitoring about the weather and operational safety conditions at Tumaco airports (La Florida), Nuquí (Reyes Murillo), Bahía Solano (José Celestino Mutis) and Guapi (Juan Casiano Solís), Quibdó (El Caraño) with the purpose of guaranteeing the safety of air operations and protecting the life of passengers, crews and airport personnel.

The entity reiterated that “Coordinated and inter -institutional work is carried out in constant communication with local, national and specialized technical organizations”. According to the official statement, air security remains “an absolute priority”, which has involved a work articulated with the General Maritime Directorate (DIMAR) and its National Alert Center for Tsunami (CNAT), in addition to risk management entities.

Alert for possible strong currents and waves of tsunami on the Pacific coast

The National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) issued Bulletin 005 warning about the “possibility of strong currents and waves of tsunami on the Colombian Pacific coast”. According to this entity, the alert arises as a result of the “8.8 MW’s momentum magnitude, registered in Kamchatka, Russia at 18:25 pm, Colombian time.”

According to the UNGRD Bulletin, according to the evaluation of the threat by Tsunami for the Colombian Pacific coasts made by the General Maritime Directorate (Dimar), “There is a probability that strong currents or tsunami waves are generated that constitute a danger.”

The affected regions are at different levels of warning:

Alert: Nariño and Chocó

Warning: Cauca and Valle del Cauca

Recommendations and Interinstitutional Coordination

Given the situation, civil aeronautics calls for citizens to “attend the recommendations of the competent authorities, keep calm and follow only official sources.” In addition, he asked users “Be attentive to updates on flight programming through our institutional channels.”

For its part, UNGRD recommended preventive measures such as:

– Total closure and evacuation of beaches, boardwalks and low -exhibition areas to lower exposure sites.
– Prohibition of maritime traffic, specific measures in ports, docks and piers.
– The community in general must remain attentive to the recommendations issued by the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) and local authorities.

In line with these guidelines, the Departmental Councils for Disaster Risk Management of Nariño, Cauca, Valle del Cauca and Chocó have been called to activate, “As well as its crisis rooms with the purpose of doing the respective monitoring of the event and monitoring the conditions that are presented.”
