Americans disapprove of Israel military actions in Gaza, throws Gallup survey

A new Gallup survey places the approval of Americans to Israel’s military action in 32 %, the lowest level recorded since the question was first asked in November 2023, immediately after Hamas’s attack.

The disapproval of Americans to Israel’s military action already reaches 60 % and presents a great divergence between parties.

The Democratic support is at a minimum of 8 %, while 25 % of the independents approve it, figures that contribute to the general decrease in approval.

The last survey was conducted between July 7 and 21. It occurs in the midst of the growing international outrage against Israel for the aggravation of the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip.

The Americans supported Israel’s actions in Gaza in their first 2023 reading, held several weeks after the Hamas attack of October 7.

Since then, disapproval has exceeded approval in each survey, reaching a maximum of 55 % in March 2024 before decreasing 48 % in two subsequent readings that same year, according to Gallup.

Although 71 % of Republicans approves Israel’s military actions in Gaza, the wide divergence between political parties is considered a threat to the historical bipartisan support to the relationship between the United States and Israel.

Senator Angus King (Independent for Maine), a member of the Select Senate Intelligence Committee, declared on Monday that he would vote against any military support for Israel in the midst of the food crisis in Gaza.

Senator Bernie Sanders (Independiente by Vermont) on Friday presented a joint resolution of disapproval to block certain shipments of weapons to Israel, supposedly to block the sale of thousands of totally automatic assault rifles.

In April 2024, Congress approved more than 14 billion dollars in security assistance for Israel and, under the Biden administration, approved more than one hundred military sales abroad.

The Trump administration announced in March that it was accelerating the delivery of approximately 4 billion dollars in military assistance to Israel.

The Gallup survey also recorded that most Americans disapprove of Netanyahu, with 52 %, its highest disapproval rate since 1997, but this measure also differs according to partisan lines.

“Two thirds of Republicans (67 %) now have a favorable opinion of Netyahu, compared to 19 % of independents and 9 % of Democrats,” said Gallup.
