In the last two decades, the Dominican Republic has registered a total of 922,370 marriages and 424,390 divorcesaccording to the data of the Observatory of the National System of Civil Registry (Arec)public consultation platform created by the Electoral Central Board (JCE).
This relationship is equivalent to A divorce for every 2.17 marriages held between 2005 and July 2025.
Of the marriages registered, 819,241 were civilianswhile 64,688 were Canonic and 21,654 non -canonical religious. They were also reported 15,152 Transcription inscriptions and 1,635 by reconstruction. As for divorces, 414,480 were direct records, 9,871 by transcription and 39 by reconstruction.
The main causes of divorce in the country are the mutual consent (244,063 cases) and Character incompatibility (167,802 cases). Other diverse causes total 12,525 divorces. Together, these data show a high proportion of legal separations with respect to the total marriages celebrated.
Annual statistics show a Sustained increase in divorces Between 2014 and 2019, followed by a strong fall in 2020 – year of pandemic – with only 13,050 divorcesand a rebound from 2021. In 2022, 29,761 cases were recorded and in 2023, 27,043. The year 2024 closed with 15,115 divorceswhile the data of 2025 are still in update.
Comparing the annual averages, the prepaandemics triennium (2017–2019) registered an average of 25,939 divorces per year, compared to 28,934 in the postpania triennium (2021–2023), which represents a 11.5 % increase. On the contrary, the marriages decreased 6.7 %, lowering an average of 52,319 to 48,790 annually between both periods.
The year 2020 also marked the least number of marriages In two decades, with 36,463 unions, coinciding with the highest health restrictions. The figures progressed progressively, reaching 50,478 marriages in 2023.
As for geographical distribution, the National District leads in records marriage (136,101), followed by Santo Domingo Este (109,269) and Santiago (89,180). These same demarcations lead the figures of divorces. Only in the National District 105,721 were reported divorces.
The vast majority of divorces registered corresponds to civil marriages. Non -civil canonical or religious unions do not appear in these statistics, since their dissolution is processed through different procedures, such as ecclesiastical nullity or non -registration in the civil system.
