Prova: post -election repression of the 28jul continues with state terrorism practices

Prova recalls the repression that broke out against inhabitants of popular sectors that took to the streets in the main cities of the country demanding respect for the vote expressed at the polls

A deafening silence rumbled in Venezuela at dawn on July 29, 2024, after the announcement of the National Electoral Council (CNE) giving as winner Nicolás Maduro, without presenting the detailed results and in the midst of the complaints of opposition fraud.

A year later, the Venezuelan Education Program Action in Human Rights (PROPERA) recalls the repression that broke out against the inhabitants of the popular sectors that took to the streets in the main cities of the country to protest the announcement made by Elvis Amoroso, president of the CNE, and demand respect for the vote expressed at the polls.

“Thousands of protesters took that day the main avenues of Caracas and other cities in a day that was marked by repression and abuses committed by public force agents and violence exerted by paramilitary groups known as ‘collective'”.

In a Communiqué published this July 29Prova underlines the impact of the action of the security forces against protesters.

«The number of murdered, in just four days of protests, rose to 25 people. In that brief, but intense period of conflict, almost half of the deaths registered in more than 150 days of protests of the year 2019 were recorded, ”he explains.

The balance of the organization indicates that until August 1, 2024, 100 people were registered, including four minors, who had entered public hospitals from the Aragua, Carabobo, Capital District, Falcón, Lara and Miranda.

Between July 29 and August 13, a total of 2,400 people were arrested and in “just 16 days an average of 150 people were arrested- actually- by Venezuelan security agents.”

In the statement, it provides that from that moment there was a “vertiginous rise of serious abuse against human rights and the intensification of a repressive wave that is still maintained through state terrorism practices such as arbitrary arrests, forced disappearances and the use of technologies for the social control of the population.”

*Journalism in Venezuela is exercised in a hostile environment for the press with dozens of legal instruments arranged for the punishment of the word, especially the laws “against hatred”, “against fascism” and “against blockade.” This content was written taking into consideration the threats and limits that, consequently, have been imposed on the dissemination of information from within the country.
