The president of the United States, Donald Trumpand the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, reached a customs agreement on Sunday in Turnberry, Scotland, after a lightning meeting.
Donald Trump explained the details: customs tariffs of 15% for imported European products, on the one hand, and the EU commitment of 750,000 million dollars in energy purchases and 600,000 million dollars in additional investments in the United States, on the other.
Von der Leyen said on its side that the aeronautical sector and other strategic areas will be exempt from tariffs. Also that the significant purchases of energy that Europe will make in the United States will serve to replace Russian supplies.
As soon as an hour of meeting had elapsed when journalists, to whom both leaders had previously informed of a “50% possibilities” of reaching an agreement, were summoned again to the luxurious dance hall of the Trump Turnberry golf complex, on the west coast of Scotland.
“We have reached an agreement,” said the Republican leader, qualifying it as the “major” never achieved in commercial matters and considering it a promise of “unity and friendship.”
The president of the European Commission, on the other hand, praised him as a “good agreement” that will bring “stability.” The European and American delegations applauded by exchanging handshakes.
The 79 -year -old Republican, immersed in a vast protectionist offensive, had occurred until August 1 before imposing 30% customs tariffs on European products that will enter the United States.
Ursula von der Leyen had been commissioned, before the conversations, to praise the talent of the New York billionaire as “formidable negotiator” and to emphasize the need to “rebuild” the transatlantic commercial relationship.
The agreement, whose complete details are still unknown, must be validated by the EU member states.
His ambassadors, who traveled to Greenland on Sunday morning, were informed about the latest negotiations and must meet again to validate him.
The Turnberry agreement confirms that transatlantic trade entered a new era of American protectionism.
