President Donald Trump announced Monday that he has decided significantly shorten the 50 -day period that had been granted to the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, to achieve a peace agreement with Ukraine. Now, the new limit will be between 10 and 12 days.
“I am disappointed by President Putin, very disappointed in him,” Trump said during an appearance before the media alongside the British prime minister, Keir Starmer, from his golf course in Turnberry, Scotland.
The president said he will establish “a new term of about 10 or 12 days as of today,” he said CNN.
As he explained, on different occasions it was believed that an agreement was imminent, but the hostilities by Moscow frustrated those advances.
“We thought we had it resolved on numerous occasions, and then President Putin goes out and begins to launch rockets against some city like Kyiv and kills a lot of people in an elderly residence or wherever,” Trump said.
“There is no reason to wait,” he added. “I want to be generous, but we just don’t see any progress.”
Trump and Putin: More sanctions?
Trump also reiterated his threat of applying additional economic sanctions to Russia, including commercial measures.
“They would be sanctions and perhaps tariffs, secondary tariffs,” he warned.
“One would think, based on common sense, which would want to reach an agreement,” added the president in reference to Putin. “I guess we will find out.”
The answer from Ukraine was swift. President Volodimir Zelenski’s chief of cabinet, Andriy Yermak, celebrated Washington’s posture tightening.
“@Potus has already said that it will shorten the deadline that gave Putin, because he believes that the answer is obvious. Putin only respects power, and that message is high and clear,” Yermak wrote in X, before Twitter.
“When the United States leads strongly, others think twice,” he said.
Thanks to President @Potus For Standing Firm and Delivening A Clear Message of Peace Through Strength. @Potus Has Already Said He’s Shortening The Timeline He Gave Putin, Besta He Believes The Answer Is Obvious.
