The Attorney General’s Office, through its special group for the fight against animal abuse (gelma), advances in the defense and protection of animal rights in the country. In recent days, the entity judged two people allegedly involved in acts of violence that ended the lives of two dogs, in cases that occurred in the departments of Tolima and Antioquia, between February and March of this year.
The facts, which have caused indignation in local communities and in animal defending organizations, are investigated under the figure of aggravated animal abusea crime contemplated in Colombian legislation.
The first case occurred on February 13 in the municipality of Anzoátegui, Tolima. The Medellín Local Prosecutor’s Office also charged the defendant for the crime of aggravated animal abuse, without this accepting the charges.

Both cases have been prioritized by the Attorney General, who in recent years has strengthened their investigative capacity to meet complaints of violence against animals, a crime that, according to Gelma figures, continues to increase.
The Prosecutor’s Office recalled that animal abuse is a crime typified in the Colombian Criminal Code since Law 1774 of 2016, and contemplates penalties that They can go from 12 to 36 months in prison, In addition to economic fines and accessory sanctions. If the abuse derives in the death of the animal or in permanent injuries, as in these cases, the penalties are aggravated.
