The Special Fund for Agricultural Development (Feda) and the National Office to Support the Penitentiary Reform (ONPREP) signed an agreement for the execution of the program “Sowing free”which seeks to encourage agriculture as a trade for some 26,000 inmates that are part of the national penintelling system.
The program will provide inmates for essential tools and knowledge in agricultural productionpromoting the cultivation of Vegetables, vegetables, coconut and cocoaas well as the production of rabbit meat, chickens and tilapia, among other items.
This production will be for the Self -consumption Within the enclosures and Marketingalso providing a learning opportunity that will allow them, by recovering their freedom, reintegrate into society with Technical skills and the economic possibilities of undertaking their own business in the agricultural sector.
The program’s goal is to establish, In a first stage:
- 19 productive units of vegetables and vegetables in prison
- Decrease food purchase spending processed in the beneficiary prison centers
- enable and use at least 70 % of the spaces available in the selected prison centers
- Train a minimum of 5,000 inmates In agricultural techniques.
