In a ceremony headed by President Gustavo Petro and the Minister of Defense, Pedro Sánchez, the Military Forces of Colombia officially presented new naval units designed and built by the Science and Technology Corporation for the Development of the Naval, Maritime and River Industry (Cotecmar).
Among the outstanding vessels are the Oceanic Patrol ARC ’24 of July ‘, the Benkos Biohó hospital ship, the AG’ Isla San Andrés’ island boat and four low -draft river operating boats, delivered to the National Navy. These projects reflect the capacity of the Colombian naval industry and the talent of more than 1,300 people linked to Cotecmar.
With 93 meters in length, 14 meters of manga and a 3.9 -meter draft, the Oceanic patrol ARC ’24 de Julio ‘becomes the largest vessel ever built in the country. Designed for surveillance, patrol, maritime interdiction and rescue missions, this ship represents a milestone in Colombia’s technological independence in the naval field.
“With this project, Colombia becomes a leader in the region with the capacities to design and build ships with high technological and large development,” said spokesmen of the National Navy.
Benkos Biohó: The first hospital ship at the Pacific service
Another of the most relevant ads was the launch of the Benkos Biohó hospital ship, a unit of 39 meters long and 9.5 wide, equipped with helipad and first level medical spaces. This boat will be a floating primary care center that will benefit more than 100,000 people in communities of the Pacific coast.
The ship will have services such as specialized external consultation, surgery, gynecology, telemedicine, image diagnosis and clinical laboratory, leading health to historically forgotten territories.
During the event, the ARC ‘Island San Andrés’ was also launched, designed to strengthen marine research, inspection of coastal areas and control of nautical activities in the San Andrés and Providencia archipelago.
Additionally, four of the 26 low -draft river operating boats were delivered, designed to navigate in difficult access areas in the Colombian rivers. These units will be used by the Marine Infantry to guarantee the presence of the State in strategic areas and provide security to riverside communities.
The act reaffirms the strengthening of the naval industry and the projection of the country as a technological reference in Latin America. Cotecmar, with more than two decades of experience, continues to lead dual projects that combine defense and social welfare.
