More than one hundred organizations reiterate their call to Congress and authorities to be prudent and resume dialogue.
Santo Domingo.-Representatives of more than a hundred business organizations, headed by CONEP and COPARDOM, expressed their deep concern and rejection of approval in the first reading, by the Chamber of Deputies, of the project of modification to the Labor Code, and were able to continue the dialogue around it.
After reviewing the approved text, they reiterated that they maintain the warning made to the Senate, that the piece is unknown previously agreed in the tripartite dialogue, introduces not discussed issues and omits fundamental aspects for the generation of formal jobs.
“Dominican Republic deserves a truly transformative labor reform, which generates more and better jobs, and that contributes to inclusive economic growth, especially in a global context full of challenges,” said business organizations.
They regretted the “urgency” with which the deputies hurry the knowledge of a reform that ignores the structural issues required for the longed for modernization.
Since the beginning of the discussions, the employer sector highlighted the need to update labor legislation.
They have reiterated their willingness to dialogue, with the objective of achieving a consensus that preserves the fundamental rights of workers, promoting productivity, encouraging the creation of formal jobs and strengthens the competitiveness of our economy.
“This reform sends a negative signal at a time when the country faces great global challenges, which demand stability, trust and vision of the future,” they said in the press release.
Conditions
“We insist that any reform of the Labor Code must be the result of a broad, participatory and based on technical studies that evaluate their economic and social impacts. This reform, in the current terms, makes the historical opportunity to achieve something transcendental with the support of the whole society,” they said.
They reiterated their call to the National Congress and the competent authorities to be prudent and resume the tripartite dialogue, with the active participation of employers, workers and government, to build a modern regulatory framework, just and adapted to the needs of the current labor market and of future generations.
