Consumption of Brazilians grows 2.63% in the first half

Index showing household consumption intentions falls 0.2% in July

Consumption in Brazilian homes registered up 2.63% in the first half of 2025according to Balando released by the Brazilian Association of Supermarkets (Abras), this Thursday (24). In June, compared to the same month last year, the growth was 2.83%. Regarding May, the indicator advanced 1.07%. “The performance confirms the resilience of families consumption, even in the face of inflation still high in the food and beverage group, which accumulated up 3.69% in the semester, above general inflation (+2.99%). Throughout the semester, consumer researched prices, exchanged brands, but did not reduce consumption in volume,” said ABras vice president, Marcio Milan.

According to Milan, the June cut has identified changes in the consumption profile of families, compared to June last year, showing lower price migration to intermediate options in some categories. “The combination of the improvement of the labor market and the circulation of extra resources in the economy seems to have expanded the space for less restrictive choices on the part of families,” he said.

Abrasteric

The abrasamer, an indicator that measures the price variation of 35 large consumption products, recorded a drop of 0.43% in June, after nine consecutive monthly. The last deflation occurred in August 2024, when the variation was -1.32%. With the retreat, the value of the basket went from R $ 823.37 in May to R $ 819.81 in June. Despite the reduction in the month, prices accumulate high of 3.18% in the semester and 9% in the 12 -month interval.

Among the animal proteins that contributed most to slowdown in the month, stand out eggs (-6.58%), beef-rear cut (-1.17%) and front (-0.64%)-and frozen chicken (-0.47%). The only rise was recorded in the ham (+0.32%). In the group of basic products, rice falls (-3.23%), wheat flour (-0.66%), soy oil (-0.59%), beans (-0.49%) and long life milk (-0.25%) were stood out.

In vegetable, potatoes (-1.90%) and onion (-0.13%) registered a drop, while tomatoes increased (+3.25%), which pressed the indicator. In hygiene and cleaning, the behavior was predominantly high, with variations in toothpaste (+0.09%), shampoo (+0.55%), soap (+0.71%) and toilet paper (+0.82%). Among the items focused on household cleaning, the increases were recorded in the disinfectant (+1.69%), soap powder (+0.85%) and liquid detergent for dishes (+0.37%). The price of bleach (-0.01%) was stable.

When analyzed the regions, the largest drop was recorded in the Southeast (-0.79%), where the basket went from R $ 843.48 to R $ 836.85. Then appear the Midwest (-0.36%), with a reduction of R $ 774.85 to R $ 772.03; The Northeast (-0.32%), with a drop from R $ 733.36 to R $ 730.98; and the South (-0.25%), where prices retreated from R $ 899.87 to R $ 897.63. In the North (+0.04%), there was a light high, and the prices went from R $ 888.15 to R $ 888.51.
