Monterrey, NL. With data to the second quarter of the year, the survey carried out by the Center for Economic Intelligence to the partners of the National Chamber of Commerce, Services and Tourism of Monterrey (Canaco Monterrey), revealed that 60% of the partners had a decrease in their sales or services income compared to the previous month, while another 38% reported that they maintained their level of sales or provision of services.
Regarding income expectations, 79% of the partners expect to increase their sales next quarter, said Jorge Omar Moreno Treviño, advisor to the Canaco Economic Intelligence Center and Professor of the Faculty of Economics of the UANL.
“Most of our partners reported that decrease (in sales). It is evident that we are entering a difficult phase, we had already felt in previous information a stagnation product of an adverse economic situation, especially because of the instability of the external variables, since we have a strong dependence (in the United States),” said Jaime Herrera Casso, president of Canaco Monterrey, at a press conference.
He added that, although the economy of Mexico has grown significantly in recent years promoted by exports, this dynamic has compromised its stability by international policies and has resulted in a decrease in the income of the trade sector.
“The commerce sector is very sensitive, especially certain types of trade, they are the first to light the light at the entrance to a phase of stagnation, and even in a recessive phase,” he deepened.
Income expectation favorable for the following months
“What this survey tells us is that most of our partners are thinking that this next quarter there will be increased sales, this at the level of perception (…) we are entering the season of purchase of school items and that has an impact on a series of branches, they are surveys that do not yield us a specific number of growth, but normally the expectation is met.”
Main problems of companies in the sector
In addition to facing a general inflation of 4.32% in the month of June, with a gross domestic product (GDP) that increased in the first 0.2% quarter with respect to the previous quarter, among the different problems faced by Canaco’s partners, highlights the excess government procedures to operate, according to the survey that the CIE conducted.
In this regard, Jaime Herrera Casso commented that they are participating with the State Government in an online project for simplification of procedures, which is in an early stage, to expedite the opening of a company in the commerce and services sector and are in contact with the authorities of the Ministry of State for the regulatory improvement to have a positive impact on trade.
For his part, Ignacio Treviño Camelo, Vice President of Economic Development of Canaco Monterrey, abounded. “Although there have been advances, not with the speed that is required and with eliminating bureaucratic procedures that sometimes complicate the process. In Canaco we maintain a constant dialogue with the authorities and different agencies to boost solutions and strengthen the business environment. We not only point out the problems, we also propose solutions. It is key to work hand in hand with government, citizenship and business organizations.”
Héctor Villarreal Muraira, general director of the agency, stressed that last month they participated in presenting the Administrative Procedure Law initiative, to give certainty to business and that the issues do not remain archived or lagging behind and three or four years later a requirement arrives.
