The NGO Justice, Meeting and forgiveness reported on Wednesday, July 23 that it has managed to verify the release of 72 political prisoners, after the recent exchange agreement between the United States and Venezuela, and condemned that to date it is unknown “officially who integrates the group of 80”.
“We deeply celebrated the freedom of each of these people, and we sympathize with their families,” said the organization. However, he warned that these release processes, being framed in diplomatic negotiations, reinforce the use of people deprived of liberty such as records of political change.
“Freedom and human dignity cannot be treated as barter objects,” denounced the NGO, and warned that this type of agreements violates fundamental principles of International Human Rights Law, perpetuating the logic of arrests as a pressure tool; However, the NGO celebrated this release.
Justice, encounter and forgiveness expressed concern about the lack of transparency in the process, the absence of guarantees of non -repetition and the official silence about the conditions of seclusion, torture and cruel treatment that many of these people would have suffered during their detention.
The Human Rights Defender Organization also rejected that no guarantees have been offered on the cessation of arbitrary arrests in the country. On the contrary, he argues that new cases of political persecution continue to register.
In this context, the NGO reiterated its call to the international community to maintain active surveillance about the human rights situation in the country, to demand transparency in this type of processes already decidedly support victims and their families, without contributing to normalize practices contrary to human dignity.
