News Colombia.
Colombia, with an extension of 1’141.748 km² of earthly surface and 928,660 km² of maritime domains, is the only country in South America with coasts in two oceans: Atlantic and Pacific. This geographical wealth makes it a country of diverse contrasts and destinations, distributed in 32 departments and 1,103 municipalities.
Among these, there is one that stands out not because of its size, but for its history, dynamism and strategic location: Sabaneta, the smallest municipality in Colombia.
Located in the Aburrá Valley, Sabaneta borders Itagüí to the north, envied to the east, Caldas to the south and the star to the west. Although it only has 15 km² of extension, it is part of the metropolitan area of the Aburrá Valley and is conurbed with the neighboring municipalities of Envigado and Itagüí.
67 % of its territory is urban, characterized by its flat topography, which has favored its population and urban development. Currently, Sabaneta has an approximate population of 90,000 inhabitants, distributed in 31 neighborhoods and 6 paths.
Where does Sabaneta name come from?
According to the Mayor’s Office of Sabaneta, the name comes from the diminutive of “Sabana”, and means soft and flat place, without tree vegetation, fertile to graze cattle or build a beautiful town. This expression reflects the geographical essence of this Antioquia municipality.
Sabaneta was founded in 1903 as the district of the municipality of Envigado. However, its growth and community leadership promoted its transformation into a municipality.
It was thanks to the management of Father Ramón Arcila and the Public Improvement Society, which on October 25, 1964 was formed by the Pro Municipality Board, led by citizens committed to local development.
Finally, on November 30, 1967, the Departmental Assembly of Antioquia issued Ordinance No. 7, which officially erected it as a municipality, valid as of January 1, 1968.
Sabaneta has become an example of urban organization, a mixture of tradition and modernity, with a strong cultural identity and a privileged location that easily connects it with Medellín and the rest of the metropolitan area.
