These destinations are considered contaminated because the presence of enterococcal bacteria exceeds the limits established by the World Health Organization (WHO) of 200 per 100 milliliters.
Enterococci are bacteria of the gastrointestinal tract of humans and animals. Its presence in marine water is used as an indicator to measure fecal pollution levels and can be harmful to health.
What are the contaminated beaches in Mexico
According to Cofepris, these are the dirtiest beaches this summer:
Michoacán: Garden/Erendira, Las Peñas, Chuquiapan, Caleta de Campos and Nexpa.
Colima: The Boca de Apiza and Real coasts.
Jalisco: The Mismaloya beaches, QUERE AND CAMARONES, all close to Puerto Vallarta.
Acapulco, Guerrero: Caletilla, Hornos, Papagayo and Carabalí are the most contaminated beaches in summer 2025.
Oaxaca: La Bocana Beach in Huatulco.
Baja California: Tijuana Beach
Three times a year, Cofepris Public the results of the seawater quality monitoring program, which permanently analyzes the country’s beaches and is reinforced before each holiday period with more tourist influx.
The initiative emerged in 2003 with the monitoring of 13 tourist destinations in 10 states. By 2025, the agency monitors the water quality of 76 tourist destinations of 17 federative entities, Armida Zúñiga, head of the Cofepris, explained.
“We now have all coastal entities, 17 in total, as part of this program,” he said.
Until July 10, 6,165 water samples of 289 Mexican beaches were taken. The increase is 32% compared to the same period last year.

All information on the water quality of Mexico’s tourist destinations is now available through the MXIs MX Mobile application, launched by Cofepris and the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat).
“Now the information about the monitoring of 289 beaches in 17 coastal entities is at the reach of Mexicans,” said Zúñiga.
