The contradictions, characteristics and changes of the far right will be the subject of the next program Dr com Demoriwhich has the participation of historian and writer João Cezar de Castro. In the conversation, Castro analyzes the differences between the fascist movement of the 20th century and the current scenario, especially the role of social networks.
The program, which airs at 23h this Tuesday (22), in TV Brazilalso addresses cultural war and rhetoric of hatred and how the phenomenon of monetization impacts Brazilian politics.
During the interview, João Cezar de Castro argues that the mechanisms used by the far right evolved with the updating of new technologies.
“We were not prepared, from a neurological point of view, to be 24 hours connected. It is in this exhaustion that the extreme right varies very powerfully around the world,” he says. The historian points out that there is not necessarily a formal agreement between leaders of different nations with this bias, but a set of shared practices.
“Without the 2008 crisis in the United States, the far right would not have advanced, because this period evidenced the most vulnerable that they are disposable even to a part of the left,” says the writer. Moreover, “they adopt a rhetoric of hatred because it is easily effective, although it produces a rude effect.”
For Castro, the far right acts based on the idea that there is a constant threat, especially related to the agenda of customs. “It is its own production that consists of inventing imaginary enemies all the time.” According to the historian, the internet is the main ally of this trend. “There are unproversed structural affinities, but for that very reason, even stronger with the digital universe. It’s like twin brothers.”
As a political instrument, the interviewee states that one of the far-right movements is the refusal to recognize the importance of the opponent for the construction of society. “They transfer to politics the basic rules of tension economy, especially the monetization of this area,” he concludes.
