The network of research journalists was born to promote the exchange of experiences, information, security protocols, training and support among its members
Research journalism plays a crucial role in the defense of democratic values and the Comptroller’s Office because it exposes human rights violations, corruption and the impact of climate change. However, according to data from The captive press: terror, silence, prison and exilethe 2024 annual report developed by this organization, in the country journalism is exercised in a complex, vulnerable and challenging context.
In response to this threatening environment for freedom of expression and information, and for the safety of journalists, the network of research journalists of Venezuela (RPI) arises. Its mission is focused on supporting and promoting the research journalism in the country through the Association of Reporters to strengthen collaboration, teamwork and security protocols.
The RPI of Venezuela aims to develop journalistic investigations whose revelations impact on the communities, demonstrate that in the country is still doing journalism of research and contributing to the journalistic update of its members.
During the first stage of formation of the network, journalists from Amazonas, Apure, Bolívar, Carabobo, Falcón, Nueva Esparta, Sucre, Táchira and Zulia participated, who received training on issues such as hypothesis, focus, sources, databases and security. They also had specialized mentoring and editorial accompaniment for the development of research reports on border issues.
The Network is coordinated by three outstanding research journalists whose works have been recognized nationally and internationally: Ronna Rísquez, expert in coverage of issues of violence, citizen security, organized crime and human rights; Lorena Meléndez, expert in the coverage of human rights, corruption, mining, environment, indigenous issues and health, and Lisseth Boon, awarded for her reports on corruption, illegal mining, environmental crimes and violation of human rights.
