In Capurganá, the prominence between the favorite destinations of adventurous travelers is steal, there is a destination near there that those who have visited it recommend it.

Located in the municipality of Acandí, in the department of Chocó, Sapzurro is a district that limits Panama and is part of the Urabá Gulf. Although Chocó is better known for its coast on the Pacific, this small corner shows that it also has a lot to offer in the Atlantic.

A haven between the jungle and the sea

His original name, «Sapurro », comes from the Kuna language and means” shallow bay “.

Sapzurro is an ensenada coral of transparent waters, surrounded by low mountains and white sand beaches that seem taken from a postcard. Its central bay, that reaches more than 30 meters deep, is ideal for divingallowing to discover reefs, underwater caves and a rich marine fauna composed of turtles, stripes, squid and colorful tropical fish.

A journey to arrive

Getting to Sapzurro is not easy, and perhaps that is one of its greatest charms. There are no direct roads or commercial airports.

The most common route is to take a boat from Turbo to Capurganá and, from there, a brief sea journey or a 3 -kilometer walk leads to the destination. There are also sporadic flights from Medellín to Capurganá in small planes, allowing a more direct arrival to this region away from the country.

Simple life and local hospitality

With less than 500 inhabitants, life in Sapzurro moves to another rhythm. Its residents, mostly Afro -descendants and indigenous people, receive the visitor with warmth and simplicity

. The accommodations range from hammocks and camping areas to cozy hostels, cabins in front of the sea or small family hotels. Although the environment is rustic, the experience is deeply authentic and cozy.

The rain is frequent, especially at night, so it is advisable to always seek covered lodging. In this natural environment, it is not uncommon to meet mycos, frogs and other small inhabitants of the forest.

Activities for the soul

Sapzurro is not an adrenaline destination, but of contemplation. Its beaches invite rest and silence, although diving is one of the favorite activities for those who seek to explore the underwater world. Places like Cabo Tiburón, Playa de la Navy or the famous honey beach (already in Panama), offer virgin landscapes and calm waters.

One of the unmissable plans is to visit the Diana waterfall, located between Capurganá and Sapzurro. Although small, its jungle environment and the harmony of the sound of water with the songs of local fauna make it a magical experience.

Flavors of the Caribbean

Local cuisine is another of its charms. Fresh fish, especially the red pargo accompanied by rice with coconut, fried cassava and patacones, dominates the menus.

Meat dishes are also offered and, curiously, homemade pizzas prepared by Germans who decided to make Sapzurro their home.

A destination to disconnect and reconnect

Sapzurro does not offer luxuries or technology, but provides something more valuable: the opportunity to reconnect with the essential. His intact natural beauty, the human heat of his people and the tranquility that wraps him makes him the perfect destiny for those who seek to move away from the noise and meet peace.
