These figures will now have indigenous physical features and dress typical attire of peasant communities in the country, as a symbol of cultural inclusion and representation of the roots of the Colombian people.
Missal renewal
In addition, the missal – the book used by priests to guide the Mass – has been renewed in its design and content.
They also highlight illustrations with traditional products such as heliconias, coffee, corn and grenadillas on the cover.
The new edition will include images with a strong local component: scenes of the indigenous -style manger, the Virgin in a state of pregnancy during the advent, or Jesus washing his disciples with an Andean aesthetic.
As for language, prayers will also undergo minor but significant modifications, looking for greater closeness with the way of speaking of the average Colombian. For example, phrases such as “Take and comed all of him” will become “take and eat all of him”, a change that, according to spokesmen of the Church, does not affect the bottom of the liturgy, but facilitates their understanding and connection with the faithful.
Father Jairo de Jesús Ramírez, director of the Liturgy Department of the Episcopal Conference, explained in an interview with Caracol News that these transformations do not alter the spiritual sense of the Mass. “It will not change anything about the essence of the celebration.
It’s just about using closer words, more ours, without affecting the sacred meaning of the rite, ”he said.
Despite the controversy, the Church insists that the objective is to achieve a more inclusive liturgy, without neglecting tradition or respect for faith. With this update, it seeks to strengthen the link between the doctrine and the identity of a deeply diverse country such as Colombia.
The missal will have an impression of 7,000 copies for all the country’s churches and it is expected that in August the implementation in all parishes in Colombia will be allowed.
