President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva participated this Monday (14) in the inauguration of the new Campus of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFF) in the city Campos dos Goytacazes, in the north of Rio de Janeiro, about 280 kilometers (km) of the capital.
According to the Ministry of Education (MEC), the works also began in 2009, by the program for supporting the restructuring and expansion plans of federal universities (Reuni), still in Lula’s second term. However, the construction was paralyzed in 2012 for lack of resources. Since then, almost 13 years have passed.
“There is no example of society that has managed to advance and improve life that did not invest in education,” said the president, during an inauguration event that took place on the new campus. For Lula, it is more expensive to stop investing in essential areas such as education.
“There are people in the financial area of this country, that anything we say, in health, education, safety, they say it will spend too much. The question I ask is: How much does it cost not to do things in the right time in this country?”
Improvised structure
Since 2016, the unit worked in rented containers, in two complementary buildings also rented and in their unit of the university. In 2020, the works were finally resumed, after an articulation that enabled parliamentary amendments, in the amount of R $ 41 million. Added to the funds arising from Reuni, the total investment in the work was R $ 72.4 million.
“This is the first time that a president of the Republic visits and Fluminense Federal University, who is 65 years old. This presence is not only symbolic, she is concrete, because she transfigures herself in learning spaces,” said Professor Claudio Lucas da Nobrega, Rector of UFF.
The Social Sciences student at the Aline Esteves institution classified our new campus as a great achievement. “It was with a lot of struggle that we are occupying this space here today. Before, we studied in containers, and now we have all this structure,” he celebrated.
New facilities
Located in the Guarus sub -district, the largest urban cluster of Campos dos Goytacazes, the new UFF campus has more than 40 classrooms, 13 laboratories, library, auditorium, administrative spaces, research and teaching offices, as well as living areas. The new unit will house undergraduate courses in Economic Sciences, Social Sciences, Geography, History, Psychology and Social Work, as well as undergraduate degrees in the areas of Social Sciences, Geography and History.
“The president authorized and we will authorize the University Restaurant (RU) on this campus,” said Education Minister Camilo Santana. The RU is also part of the claim of campus students, in addition to the multipurpose multipurpose multipurpose court, whose works were authorized by MEC.
