President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is expected to visit China again in May, when he will have a new meeting with President XI Jinping. The visit will take place in the context of the summit between China and countries of the community of Latin American and Caribbean states (Celac). The date of the trip – between May 12 and 13 – was set this week during the 9th Celac summit held in Honduras, which was attended by Lula.
The forecast of the trip was confirmed by the Planalto Palaceand should occur following the visit that the president will make to Russia.
At the invitation of President Vladimir Putin, Lula will participate in the 80th anniversary celebrations of the Soviet Union victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. It is Russia’s most important holiday, which takes place on May 9, with a grand civic-military parade in Moscow.
International trade
The meeting between Lula and Xi Jinping will take place amid the intensification of the trade war between the United States and Chinathe two largest economies on the planet. The imposition of mutual tariffs, triggered at the initiative of US President Donald Trump, has been causing successive turmoil in action markets and fears the fear of a global recession.
The trip to China will be Lula’s second official visit in this third term. The previous visit took place in April 2023, which was returned by Xi Jinping on a state visit in November last yearafter the G20 summit, based by Brazil. In addition, they had met again in 2023 at the Brics summit in South Africa.
