This Tuesday, the Senate began the debate on the venia to designate Mario Layera as the new strategic intelligence director of the State, proposed by the Yamandú Orsi government. The designation has generated controversy, with the Frente Amplio supporting Layera’s candidacy, while the National Party announced its vote against.
Senator Daniel Caggiani presented the proposal, highlighting Layera’s outstanding curriculum as a policeman and his link with Julio Guarteche, former director of the Anti -Drug Brigade, known for his extensive career in the National Police. However, the senators of the National Party have expressed their rejection of the designation, arguing a “lack of political confidence.” Senator Graciela Bianchi mentioned that there are no guarantees to support Layera, while Sebastián Da Silva recalled that Layera was a police hierarch in the period in which the controversial meetings in jail were registered between two international drug traffickers, which resulted in a criminal complaint.
Although the Prosecutor’s Office filed the complaint related to the meetings and transfers of drug traffickers, the case of Morabito’s escape is still open, which feeds criticism in the opposition. Now, the Colorado Party position is expected, whose vote will be key to reaching the special majority of three fifths needed to approve the designation.
