President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expressed, on Friday (11), support and solidarity with Denmark in the question of Greenland’s attachment by the United States. US President Donald Trump repeatedly expresses the desire to attach the Danish autonomous territory in the Arctic to the American country.
Lula received a call from Denmark Prime Minister Mette Frederiksenwith whom he talked about the current geopolitical context and other topics of interest to both countries.
Over Greenland, Denmark has already reaffirmed that the territory is not open to annexation and regional leaders have already denounced “foreign interference”.
In mid -March, Trump stated that annexation by the United States will eventually happen to promote international security.
The autonomous territory seeks to obtain sovereignty, but remains financially dependent on Denmark. Although all major Greenland parties are favorable to territory independence over a longer long term, none of them support the idea of a connection to the United States.
The Arctic Island, with 2 million square kilometers, 80% of which is covered with ice, has a population of only 56 thousand inhabitants. The region is important from the geostrategic point of view. The United States maintain a military base in the north of the islandas part of a broad defense agreement signed in 1951 between Copenhagen and Washington.
In addition to the strategic location in the Arctic, Greenland is coveted by its natural resources, although oil prospecting and uranium extraction is prohibited.
International policy
Another call issue between Lula and Frederiksen were the ongoing tariff changes in the international scenariostarted by US President Donald Trump.
“Both agreed with the importance of defending the principles of multilateralism, especially with regard to free trade,” says a statement from the presidency.
In the conversation, which lasted about 40 minutes, the Leaders expressed the determination of working together for the completion of the Mercosur European Commercial Agreementnegotiated for over 20 years.
In the second half, Brazil will be in the presidency of the South American bloc and Denmark in the rotating presidency of the European Union Council.
President Lula also reinforced the invitation for the Danish Prime Minister to visit Brazil in the second half, both to participate in the 30th United Nations Conference on Climate Change, in Novemberin Belém, as the Brazil-Union Summit, whose date will still be set.
