The decision, adopted during the annual meeting of the Network of Offices of the Historian and the Curator of the Heritage Cities of Cuba, responds to the historical merits of that town and the preservation of its colonial architectural complex, the most important in the province of Holguín .
Precisely, Gibara boasts a rich real estate heritage in which styles from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries are combined, of which its main exponents are the system of fortifications; the House of Culture or the Museum of Decorative Arts.
Also noteworthy is the Calixto García park -formerly the Plaza de Armas-, where the Villa Blanca de los Cangrejos has its own Statue of Liberty, unveiled in October 1915, at the base of which reads: “Gibara has a Statue of Liberty, because he deserves it (made by popular subscription)”.
Declared a National Monument in 2004, the coastal city reached its 205th anniversary in January; birth that marks it in 1817, when they placed the first stone of a fortification, located in Punta de Yarey, where the Fernando VII Battery is located.
Since then, the marine city has accumulated various attractions, from its incomparable nature, with emblematic sites, such as the Cueva de los Panaderos or its bay, where Christopher Columbus stayed when he arrived in Cuba in 1492.
All these values contributed to Gibara becoming the muse of the filmmaker Humberto Solás; She is also the undisputed protagonist of the International Film Festival -continuation of the Poor Cinema-, which, in each edition, is attended by artists from Cuba and the world to deliver art and soul.
The Holguin town next to Sagua la Grande joins the Network of Offices of the Historian and the Conservator of Heritage Cities, in which Viñales, Guanabacoa, Havana, Matanzas, Cienfuegos, Remedios, Sancti Spíritus, Trinidad, Camagüey, were already present. Bayamo, Santiago de Cuba and Baracoa.
In December 2008, this Network was established and later established as a national institution with its own legal personality, with the mission of supporting the management of historic cities, in addition to promoting restoration, archeology and care of cultural values. heritage of the country.
