Employment: 100,000 young people lost their job in 2024

Employment: 100,000 young people lost their job in 2024

Last year the employment Youth retreated, according to data from the National Statistics and Informatics Institute (INEI). According to the data, the employed population under 25 decreased to 3.9%, that is, 100,000 people in this age range lost their jobs.

This group includes people between 14 and 24 years old, and in 2024 it reached 2’460.400, which represented 14.2% of the economically active population (PEA) occupied.

INEI’s information also reveals that labor informality in this segment reaches 85.6% of the total, which meant an advance of 0.7% if compared to what is registered a year earlier.

In this regard, laborists consulted by Peru21among them Germán Lora, Ricardo Herrera and Jorge Toyama, stated that the result of 2024 is worrying because employment is not promoted for this segment.

For Toyama, one of the problems is that there is a type of employment that is not valued by these people, such as those related to operators and cleaning. To this is added that what is being taught in educational institutions does not generate much employment.

“It is also being given that there are transnational companies that work from Peru, but they have people who live outside, something we could call ‘labor tourists’,” he said. He also said that there are no indications that the situation of young people in the country is soon reversed.

Similarly, Ricardo Herrera said that in Peru there are no public policies to reverse this situation, which can cause this population to leave the national territory to seek new opportunities.

“We are talking about a significant increase in the population that today has no job. It may be a percentage that is not studying either. So you have to improve public universities and create employment programs,” he added.

For his part, Germán Lora recalled that as part of the impulse of youth employment, the law of the young businessman (Law 31828) was promulgated in 2023, but noted that it is not largely used because the State has not promoted it.

The initiative refers, among other things, that the taxpayer of the general regime or the tax regime that hires persons aged 18 to 29, for the purpose of determining the income tax of exercises 2024 and 2025, can apply an additional deduction equivalent to 50% of the basic remuneration paid by the new worker.

“The Congress, instead of wanting to expand to the CTS, should expand the norm,” he said and added that the law on labor training modalities (28518) is necessary, “to be a good mechanism for entering the labor market” .
