The state of São Paulo recorded temperatures above 40 degrees in the early afternoon of Monday (17). On the second day of warning the heat wave in the state, the highest temperatures were recorded on the coast and in the Ribeira Valley: 40.2 degrees in Iguape; 40.1 degrees in record and 40 degrees in Santos. Part of the region, such as the municipalities of Registration and Guarujá, have the situation aggravated due to the need to serve dozens of families displaced in the rains of the last two weeks.
In addition to the most accurate measurements in the stations, street thermometers marked temperatures above 40 degrees in the west of the state capital, where the city’s service tents recorded about 200,000 calls since last Thursday (13). The forecast is of high temperatures until at least this Wednesday (19), with recommendation of city halls and the state so that elderly and young children receive extra attention.
According to the São Paulo Civil Defense, it is this year’s first heat wave in the state, the third in the country. The temperature at 38 degrees should remain in various regions of the state, at least until Wednesday, with rain forecast from tomorrow (18).
In the state capital, the Emergency Management Center (CGE) indicated measurements at 35 degrees in the southern region, in Parelheiros, with air humidity record in 34%. At the other end of the city, in Perus, 33 degrees and 31% relative humidity of the air were recorded.
“In these intense heat situations, the recommendation of CGE is to drink water at ease, not expect to feel thirsty to hydrate, avoid exposure to strong sun and outdoor exercise in the most warming hours, between 10h and 17h”, says the institution’s note. “In addition, it is essential to use caps, hats, sunscreen, sunglasses and humidifiers in indoor environments such as wet towels and buckets with water,” adds the CGE.
Despite the recommendation, there was no indication of suspension or restrictions on activities in schools or in parks and leisure areas.
According to the CGE, the city of São Paulo has been on alert for high temperatures since 9:40 am on Monday (17). There is a forecast of rain showers in the late afternoon and early evening tomorrow.
