Economy Minister José Salardi announced that in the next six months the Government will sign an addenda to the granting contract of the Arequipeño Puerto de Matarani, which will allow its consolidation as a key logistics axis for the south of the country. The announcement was given after a meeting held last Thursday in which the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), Proinversion and Tisur, concessionary company of the terminal.
As indicated by Luis del Carpio, Executive Director of Proinversion, the extension proposal presented by the concessionaire includes an investment plan of about $ 600 million so that Matarani continues to accompany the productive growth of the south of the country. These will be allocated to the construction of a new mooring of 280 meters, a 150 -meter break, a mineral warehouse with a capacity of 40,000 metric tons, a 4.6 -hectare container courtyard, and the installation of new cranes, among other components.
For his part, the general manager of Tisur, Mauricio Núñez del Prado, said that the investments raised are fundamental for the port of Matarani to be ready to meet the demand generated by new investment projects. “Given the increase in the mining and agricultural production of the southern regions, and the development of upcoming projects such as Zafranal, Corani, Los Calatos, Huaquira or Majes Siguas II, it is essential to expand the capacity of our port infrastructure. Otherwise, we will face a bottleneck very soon, ”said Núñez del Prado, who indicated that the projects that will be viable for the expansion of the port total a total investment of $ 11,000 million.
The Executive also pointed out that the proposed investment will expand the load capacity of cranes by 50%, the capacity of the docks by 25%and the mineral storage capacity by 22%. This goes in line with a terminal plan approved by National Port Authority (APN) last October.
The investments are raised as part of an extension proposal of the current concession contract for 30 years from 2029. This initiative, provided for in the legislation, was presented by Tisur in November 2023 and its subscription was scheduled for the end of 2025. However, the new management of the MEF has prioritized the project, for which it has commissioned its economic evaluation to proinversion within the framework of its powers contemplated in the Law of Private Public Associations (APP). This evaluation will be completed in March, and the final subscription of the addendum is expected for before national holidays.
It should be noted that the concession of the port of Matarani recently turned 25, during which its load capacity was multiplied by six, from 1.3 million tons in 2000 to 8.2 million in 2024. To achieve this increase, Tisur made investments for $ 291 million, which have allowed Matarani to be the most important mining load terminal in South America.
This investment has been accompanied by contributions to the Treasury for $ 257 million between payments for retribution and income tax payments. In addition, Tisur has generated very significant opportunities for the local population, since more than 75% of its 700 collaborators come from the province of Islay.
With the proposed extension, the generation of 1,800 additional jobs during the constructive phase is expected, as well as about $ 356 million in new contributions to the State throughout the validity of the concession.
In addition to the concession of the port of Matarani. The management of José Salardi plans to subscribe other adhes to concession contracts for a total amount of $ 3,000 million before the national holidays. “I am fully convinced that public-private associations are the best mechanism that exists to develop sustainable infrastructure in Peru. That is why Proinversion has all the support of the MEF. Where you have to unlock, here there is an ally to do it, ”said the minister.
