The São Paulo Environmental Military Police seized 14.7 tons of fish during Operation Piracema. 2,100 inspection actions were carried out from November to February, the period of reproduction of part of the fish species.
The actions are carried out with navigation in rivers, lagoons, dams and reservoirs of the Paraná River and Southeast Atlantic basins. In addition, 732 illegal nets and 56 vessels were seized.
During the spawning period, the capture, transport and storage of native species are prohibited. Fishing for non-native fish, however, is allowed, subject to certain restrictions.
The minimum fine for non-compliance is R$ 700. There is also the possibility of registering an environmental crime and apprehending instruments, vessels or vehicles used in the direct practice of the infraction.
Fishing restrictions do not apply to fish from pay-fishing and fishing grounds registered with the competent body, but the product must be accompanied by an invoice.
